We get lost in our characters, descriptions, plot twists, and the general stuff of writing. Ever so often we need to take a step back, take a helicopter view of what we are creating. At its most basic all those words are simply making shapes on the page. How these shapes present to the reader's eye can make the difference between whether your words are read or not. Whether your book sells or not. Blocks of dense text are daunting. A subconscious turn off for anything other than academic works. But more positively, the shapes your text makes can reflect, even enhance, your writing style. Try this, it only takes a second. Reduce your page size to say 30%. Highlight your text in black. What do these shapes tell you about your writing? Do your words form solid blocks, or do they dance across the page, enticing the reader on?
